Compositora y pianista estadounidense. Música precoz y brillante, se presentó como solista con las principales orquestas de EE.UU. y Europa. Como compositora se inclinó más hacia el romanticismo alemán que hacia temas o fuentes estadounidenses. Sus obras más apreciadas fueron sus canciones. Su Sinfonía gaélica (1894) fue la primera sinfonía escrita por una mujer estadounidense. Otras obras son un concierto para piano (1899), las piezas corales The Chambered Nautilus (1907) y Cántico del Sol (1928), la ópera Cabildo (1932) y un quinteto para piano (1907).
